Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy, OBE is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist producing site-specific sculpture and land art situated in natural and urban settings.

Andy Goldsworthy has choosen a beach for his location in this photograph and has chosen the topic of pattern. He has chosen stones that decrease in size and broken them roughly in half and placed them in a spiral. This black spiral is outlined by the white scratches which denotes that the spiral is everlasting

Andy Goldsworthy has captured a dark graduated tone. The image is raised and has a shining texture. The shape is organic and detailed. The colour is warm and dark as he has chosen a range of yellows oranges and reds which gives the image a warm glow.  The mood is thought-provoking as you have all that colour that leads to a black hole in the middle.

The mood is cheerful because of the colour being light and yellow. The shape is organic and curvaceous. The photo has a light tone. The viewpoint is a birds eye view. The lighting is natural and the location is in a field outside. The texture is fluffy and soft.

This photo has thin simple lines. The simple subtle light tone in the foreground contrasts with the darker tone in the background. The shape is detailed and curvaceous. Theforeground colour is natural and subtle whereas the background colour is natural and earthy.

The focus of this photo is the horizontal line of leaves. This photo has a constant dark tone. The shape is linear and stylized. The colour is deep and earthy as well as dark because of this the mood set is dark sombre and gloomy. The lighting is minimal and natural. The viewpoint is that of a bird's.

The subject matter of this  photograph is the rock covered in poppy leaves. This is the subject because it is what stands out in the photo. When I look at this photograph I see the red rock first, this makes me think about individuality and difference and the mood I feel is cheerful and happy.  The subject is successfully highlighted as the red rock stands out and separates itself from the other rocks. There is no backlighting and the source of light is natural. The effects of shadow highlight the red colour of the rock in the middle even more. The Texture of the photo seems mostly rough as you can see the uneven edges of rocks but the red stone looks like it would be soft to touch as the edges seem smooth. The Colour is mostly grey which denotes cold and sadness where as the red stone denotes passion and love and warmth. The camera angle looks like it is from a birds eye view which could be telling people to look down because you don't now what you will find. The photo shows no proof of shutter speed manipulation as this is a still image. This photograph also shows no evidence of darkroom manipulation or photoshop manipulation. The depth of field is wide in the photograph which means that the foreground and the background stay in focus as the photograph looks like the camera was close to the ground it means that he used a smaller aperture to make the depth of field increase. The intentions of this photograph are to convey that anything can become artwork and that using leaves or sticks can mean you great a beautiful photograph that is both successful at highlighting an image and also is very aesthetically pleasing. I like this photo as the image is very aesthetically pleasing and it reminds me we are all artwork we just need to let someone reveal our true beauty and this image would stand out to me anywhere as I makes me feel calm happy and warm and passionate.

The first thing that catches my eye is the  bright green Iris leaves then my attention goes to the bright red rowan berries. When I look at this image I feel peaceful and tranquil as the leaves and berries are floating peacefully. The photograph is successful as there is no doubt to the subject matter as without knowing the title of the photo you can still know that the subject is the green iris leaves with red rowan berries. The lighting in the photo is natural and the position of the sun relative to the subject is behind the canopy of leaves. There are many lines in the photograph as the leaves make the lines. Some of the lines made by the leaves lead us to the rowan berries but others do not. This photo conveys calmness from the horizontal lines as well as strength from the vertical lines and also movement in the diagonal lines. The iris leaves and the rowan berries are the light standing out from the shadowed water, This gives the photograph a contrasting tone. The pattern in this photograph is created by the photographer but it is the repetition of lines from the iris leaves as well as the dots made by the rowan berries. The texture of this photo depends on the part that you focus on, the leaves look like they would feel sharp to touch whereas the berries look like quite smooth and soft. Most of Andy Goldsworthy's photographs focus on looking down at the ground although there are exceptions. This photograph is no different the camera angle is slanted bird's eye view and this again connotes that we should look down more often to see the beauty in what is around us instead of running around looking straight ahead. The impact of placing the leaves as they are with the berries as they are means that there is chaos as well as order which could reflect our lives as we both have chaos and order. This photo has the green from the leaves which relates to nature and the red which relates to warmth, this together suggests that nature surrounds warmth. I believe that Andy Goldsworthy used a fast shutter speed on this photo as the leaves and berries are on water which means they could move but instead of the blur from movement, it is like they have been frozen in time. I believe that the depth of field is shallow as the foreground which contains the subject is in focus. There is no evidence of darkroom manipulation or and there is no evidence of photoshop manipulation as Andy makes the photo subjects himself and does not feel that manipulating the photo after it is taken is needed. I believe that Andy Goldsworthy is trying to make people look around at the wonderful world we live in and think about what patterns we could create with nature instead of destroying it. I believe that he is making a statement that the world we live in is wonderful and beautiful so we should respect it more. If this photo was in an exibihtion or a book then i would definelty look at it more in-depth as this photograph is thought-provoking and is also athetically pleasing. I find this photo as well as all of Andy's work to be very enjoyable as he is creating the subject himself and shares his creativity with the rest of the world.
